PREFACE

The idea to create this book came to me while writing my first personality development book, Breaking Your Own Boundaries.

Growing up, I learnt many new things by reading, and my curiosity has given me opportunities throughout the years to test and observe whether what I have read can be practically applied to my life.

I find myself energized by the things I look forward to every day — even as simple as waking up and having breakfast. Every time I feel like giving up on my goals, quotes and advice from motivational speakers and people who have already reached such stages in their lives encourage me to continue striving.

I have always appreciated writers’ experiences and their commitment to sharing them in writing. Therefore, I decided to write these quotes based on my personal experiences, without censoring any words, to motivate you in some way.

Most of the time, I make sure that anything I say does not hurt the feelings of others. I am also known as someone who is careful and selective in what I share with others, including my opinions.

My friends often ask me, ‘How can you be so calm and patient in stressful situations?’ This usually happens while giving presentations, during exams or when dealing with difficult people. When I am nervous, I think about what I plan to do after the event, like going to a cafe or watching a movie, so I can focus on something other than what makes me anxious. Thinking about how this book can motivate readers, I am able to break through my wall of nervousness and hesitation and gather the courage to express my uncensored thoughts.

When you read Be Brave: Uncensored Motivational Quotes, I hope you find the assurance to be self-aware of your strengths and holistic disposition, to be brave in your decision-making and to accept and appreciate yourself. I hope you will be brave when defending your rights and yourself, and I hope these words will somehow motivate you when you feel down in the same way they helped me.

4 Practical Ways to Improve Your Writing Skills | Author | S.Sulianah | Winter Scribbler Publishing

2/17/2022

Before you go ahead to apply for a course on how to write creatively or fluently to improve this writing skills of yours, the first step is to know what you want out of being skillful in your writing. Such as is it to get better grades, to write a convincing presentation, to publish your books, to write scripts and many other possible reasons. Because there are many courses out there that have different objectives. If you want to write for your books, then it is better to look for courses that is related to authorship and publishing instead of writing movie scripts. If you want to improve on your English writing skills as a beginner, it is better to look for courses that fits the level you are looking for. Focus on your main objectives.

The second step is to focus first on your basics like grammar, forming sentences, using the correct vocabulary that suits the environment you are in. You can learn bombastic vocabulary which I used to do but nowadays I can rely on thesaurus to help add more spice to the words in my articles. As for conversation like this, I will usually use the simplest words depending on my audience.
The third step is to keep writing. Write in private before publishing anything if you have no confident yet to let people read your contents. Start by writing on your diary about your daily feelings and thoughts. Write about your ideas. Write your own blogs. When you travel, write about your experiences, the food you eat, how you feel about the landscapes and the people you met. When you read books or articles, watch movies or went to a concert or listen to a music album, write your opinions about it like a review. Apply what you had learnt in those courses you had taken and test whether it is practical. If writing a full paragraph is too heavy for you, start with writing mind maps or in points first. Then, gradually from there build your momentum.

The last step is to let people read what you had written. This part usually will develop when it is time. There will this moment when you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and opinions and feelings to strangers. These could be through any forms like blogs, books, articles, websites, newspapers, magazines or even writing to your friends. It doesn’t mean that you felt that whatever you had written are perfect. I don’t believe in 100% perfection in writing because there will be at some points on the final article there could still be space for improvements even after final edit and after you published.

How to Overcome the Challenges as a Published Author, Writer, or Scriptwriter? | S.Sulianah | Winter Scribbler Publishing

2/17/2022

Now what are the possible challenges that you might face while trying to achieve your target to be a published author, or well-known quality scriptwriter or even having A+ for your thesis, for your reports?

Firstly, remember that all these steps are to be done phase by phase. It takes time. When I say time means months and years. So, keep writing and keep learning. Do not give up.

When your readers shared with you their perspectives on what you had written, listen. Then if you would like to tell them why you wrote like that, tell them your points respectfully. They are your readers and usually for me I will listen to those who reads my contents but not to people who criticized but didn’t even care about reading what I had written. So focus on your readers, your followers and your fans.

Secondly, since your main goal is to be better in your writing skills, you have to be opened to learn and gain new knowledge. If you disagree with the instructor’s opinions and teachings in class or lectures, process the information first before telling her or him that you disagree or if you do not like what was shared. Be respectful.

Also, there is no need to be embarrassed when you want to take any courses. Doesn’t matter your age, your status quo, or any excuses that you have in mind. When I was in secondary 1, I told my dad to enrol for me a creative English class because I feel like I was really weak with my English writing skills. The class was conducted in one of the community centres near my place and the instructor was quite detailed with the technicality which for me was what I needed during that time. I was not embarrassed to request my dad to help me register for it and telling him frankly I need to improve. And when I had completed that course, I felt one more level of confidence achieved because I get to learn new techniques which raised my knowledge and skills in writing.

The third challenge is applying whatever you had learnt into actions. Because it will be such a waste of money and time if you don’t. Frankly, I don’t apply everything I had learnt because there are a load of information to be applied. So, I will selectively apply whenever I needed it. But don’t waste your money and time if you don’t think that is what you want.

The fourth point is made sure you complete everything and never ever do anything halfway and leave without finishing your tasks. Again, it will be waste of money and time if you do things halfway or you study halfway. If you are 1/3 working on it, and you get tired of it like really you hated it not because you feel lazy about, if you really hated it, find out why. Is it because of the course’s syllabus or the instructor? Is it because somebody told you that it is not worth it? Is it because you have no energy to do it anymore? That is why before you embark on anything, or register your application, think first.

And on the other type of challenges especially when you start writing a book, why are you doing it halfway? You have to ask yourself why can’t you finish it? Possible reasons when you are unable to finish the book you are writing are for instance there is still not much evidence to support your theory so you need more time, it could be because you think you have writers’ block, or probably you need to be heartbroken first to finish the poetry book. Find out the reasons and attempt to it immediately. Do not drag. Just for your information, whenever you have writers’ block, go grab a book and read. This will make you go back to writing fluently and complete it within the next few days. About the heartbroken or frustrated situations, sometimes this could be a trigger to make you write. My first poetry book that I published years ago it was an immediate decision which I managed to compile all the poems I had written over the years and publish it within 2 to 3 days. My 2nd poetry book was when I was a little bit heartbroken and I wanted to shut off the chapter immediately, so I wrote the last few pages in a day and then proceed to publish it after a week. As for my latest book, Be Brave : Uncensored Motivational Quotes, it took me about 8 hours to write all the quotes plus 2 days to add in details to the backstory of those quotes before I proceed to publish it. This was written when I wanted to vent my last few feelings of frustrations towards a group of individuals. So, because I wanted to change to a new chapter in my life, I had to let go of the past in that way.

Make full use of your current situations to complete your writing tasks and goals. This is one of the possible important reasons to complete your writings.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR BE BRAVE:UNCENSORED MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES | Book Signing | Author | S.Sulianah | Winter Scribbler Publishing

11/25/2021

Q1. How do you get the idea to write this book?

The plan to write a book on ‘motivational quotes’ has been at the back of my mind. It was one of the books I wanted to write this year. At that time, I was in the midst of writing my first motivational/self-help book on self-esteem but then out of nowhere, I started to write this first instead.

Q2. What was your inspiration to write this book?

The ideas were from my experiences meeting with people over the years. With those I worked with, acquaintances, and friends. Both good and unpleasant one were triggers for me to share every layers from my perspectives. Most importantly, how I managed to handle every bits and pieces of it and then move on and forward to the next chapters.

Q3. How long does it take for you to write this book?

Ah... the first write-up, which is the first draft, it took me only about 7 hours. It was initially only 89 pages. Simple and straightforward kind of quotes which I had stored in my brain for years. The process that took so long were the second draft, third drafts and so on. After I sent my first draft for professional book critique and then editing plus proofreading, it took me additional weeks. So, from 3 August to end of Oct 2021, it took about 3 months.

Q4. How did you come out with the design idea for the book cover?

Usually, I will run contests for my book covers and is open to designers worldwide. I will highlight the book designs’ requirements and as for this, specifically I would like these colours. How the designers want to play around with the design, it is up to them. I chose to award the winner, Ralph Cavero, because his design is different compared to the others’. See that cancelled line on the word DON’T, this made it different. Also, a metaphor for the contents of the book. Something like, when people say ‘No, you cannot do it’, you have to tell yourself ‘Yes, I Can!’

Q5. Were there any challenges while producing this book?

This book for me is different from the poetry books I had written. The poems I wrote were more of my experiences that are more personal, and usually love stories. Readers need not need to evaluate and apply to their own life. As for these motivational quotes, they are more like a handbook if readers need to use for self-encouragement. At first I was worried if the quotes will be too harsh since all of it are uncensored. And also quite concerned people will misinterpreted and misused the expressions in a negative way. However, my concerns were eventually resolved. Before the final book edit, I managed to analysed related videos and research articles by other motivational speakers and individuals just to make sure everything I had written are in the positive alignment.

Decided to gift my 2 favorite teachers from my secondary school. Ms Ow Yong, my Mathematics teacher from Sec 1 to 2. I talked about her before in my podcast. Because of her style and techniques she shared, I fall in love with the subject. Since then, even when I was in Uni, for any subjects related to Mathematics, my grades will always be above 80%. Another one is for Mdm Ida Lim, my Geography teacher from Sec 3 to 5. I also talked about her in my podcast. Always looked forward to her classes, and that contributes positively to my interests in Geography.

Q6. Why did you choose this book title?

[Laugh] Initially, the book title I had for my first few drafts was ‘Uncensored Motivational Quotes with Tips to Respond to Idiots Confidently’. I was not comfortable with it and such a coincidence when I sent my draft for the pro book critique’s comments. I was suggested to look into the title again. Since the theme of this book is to Be Brave in making decisions, acknowledging yourself, and on the other hand, I don’t want to remove the word uncensored, finally I decided to titled it as what we have now for the final product. Also, before finalizing, I had to do more market research on the books in the market which is part of the process.

Q7. Which is your favourite quote(s) in this book?

I cannot choose one. But but but...the specific one that will make me laugh everytime I re-read it especially during editing were the quotes under the chapter, ‘When You Need to Be Brave to Move on from Someone You Love’. The quotes that made me do not want to repeat the same experiences and meet with those type of people again in any phase of my life were the ones under the chapter, ‘When You Need to Be Brave to Confidently Respond to Certified Idiots’. And as for the quotes that I feel like I have to still keep reminding myself to remember and not slipped out of my mind are the ones under the chapter, ‘When You Need to be Brave to Acknowledge Your Instincts’. Cos justifying can have a strong hold that could last as long as a decade which I don’t want it to happen again.

A Quote from Be Brave: Uncensored Motivational Quotes by S.Sulianah

In any type of relationship, there is no substitute for respect. It doesn’t matter how in love you are, how deep your romance is or how wonderful your intimate moments are. Once your partner raises their hand to you, uses words that are displeasing or demeaning toward you, the love and romance does not mean anything.
Be logical when you are justifying others’ actions towards you.
Respect your self-worth.

PROFESSIONAL BOOK REVIEWS OF BE BRAVE: UNCENSORED MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES | Author S.Sulianah | Winter Scribbler Publishing

11/25/2021

Publishers Weekly Reviewer - BOOKLIFE REVIEWS

Sulianah offers a compendium of original maxims, thoughts, and advice for readers eager for continual inspiration, with the promise that, even when the material gets frank or challenging, the author will resist the urge to censor. Sharing a few lines or even short paragraphs on each page on a host of topics, Sulianah urges readers toward self love and acceptance (“Believe in yourself even though others do not believe in you”), overcoming self doubt (“You can overcome anything in your life. The question is whether you want to”), and understanding and even exiting unhealthy relationships (“Do not make compromises when others devalue you as a person.”)

The result reads like the advice a friend might want to offer to someone caught in an unhealthy relationship or situation but at times, out of politeness, might soft-pedal. No soft-pedaling here, though: “If someone cannot accept who you are, why are you desperate to be who they want you to be?” asks Sulianah, whose experience as a poet shines through in the crisp, direct, at times epigrammatic prose. While generally upbeat and encouraging, Sulianah’s straight talk at times comes with sharp elbows: one chapter is titled “Confidently Respond to Certified Idiots,” which addresses situations like the boss who won’t listen, acquaintances who ask to borrow money, and how to respond when someone raises their voice.

The thread tying the at times loosely organized advice together is “be brave,” and in entries that range from a couple quick, sharp lines to ones that share a personal anecdote and spread across a couple pages, Sulianah identifies familiar, relatable real-life situations and practical, self-preserving guidance for how to handle them. Throughout, the imperative to be courageous and to protect one’s self worth shines through: “Not even your parents are allowed to make you feel down about yourself,” Sulianah declares, and readers seeking encouragement will find much to buoy themselves here.

Clear, practical, original inspirational quotes urge readers to prioritize their self worth.

Poem from Letters of a Thousand Speeches | S.Sulianah | Winter Scribbler Publishing

This is one of the poems featured in Letters of a Thousand Speeches book by S.Sulianah

"When I told you I could write hundreds of letters filled with a
thousand speeches, what I meant was I have done it since the day
we met again seven years ago.

Your kindness, attention, protectiveness, wit and curiosity have lit
up my life. Every time you smile, it seeps into my mind, begging
to be in my memory.

The way you laughed and how you hid that beautiful shy smile
puts me to sleep at night.

I thought I had lost all this seven years ago. And then you came
back."
